KLONOPIN (CLONOZEPAM)
Clonazepam (commonly known by brand names like Klonopin) is a prescription benzodiazepine used to treat seizure disorders, panic disorders, and sometimes severe muscle spasms or anxiety, often for short-term relief. It acts as a central nervous system depressant by increasing GABA, a calming chemical in the brain. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and coordination problems. Key Information About Clonazepam Serious Side Effects & Warnings: It can cause severe dizziness, confusion, or suicidal thoughts. It should not be stopped abruptly, as this can cause withdrawal, including seizures, tremors, and insomnia. Interactions: It significantly interacts with other central nervous system depressants, such as alcohol, narcotics (e.g., oxycodone), and sleeping pills, which can increase the risk of dangerous sedation or respiratory depression. Mechanism of Action: Clonazepam acts as a GABA-A receptor agonist, strengthening the inhibitory effects of neurotransmitters in the brain, which leads to its anticonvulsant and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties. Uses: FDA-approved for epilepsy (seizures) and panic disorder. It is sometimes used off-label for REM sleep behavior disorder, restless leg syndrome, and acute mania. Common Side Effects: The most frequent side effects are drowsiness, sedation, fatigue, dizziness, and impaired coordination
